Is it possible to remove an item from a batch?

Yes it is; items can indeed be removed from or added to batches as required by using the plus/minus icons on the batch:

To remove an item click the minus icon then select which item(s) you wish to remove:

The item will then be placed back at the top of the screen, waiting to be included in another batch, and the total items within the existing batch will update:
